This page emphasizes the teaching plan used at SMP Negeri 4 Pekalongan, including the curriculum, instructional materials, and classroom practices I observed during my exchange program.

I learned that teachers at SMP Negeri 4 Pekalongan refer to books and create their own modules as teaching materials. These modules help guide lessons and ensure that students receive structured and well-organized instruction. Additionally, the school follows the Merdeka Curriculum, which is translated as the “Independent Curriculum.”

Through my observations, I discovered that the Merdeka Curriculum was introduced in 2022 and was officially approved by the National Curriculum in 2024. This curriculum was designed to improve learning and provide a more flexible and student-centered approach to education.

Through my first-hand experience in the classroom, particularly by observing my cooperating teacher, I was able to see how this curriculum is applied in teaching. This page will explore my experiences and insights on how the teaching plan at SMP Negeri 4 Pekalongan shape students’ learning and development.

School Curriculum

Education is guided by a structured curriculum that serves as the foundation for teaching and learning. A well-designed curriculum ensures that students receive meaningful academic experiences while helping teachers facilitate effective instruction. It outlines the structure, organization, and key educational considerations that shape how learning takes place in the classroom (Siddiqui, 2024). At SMP Negeri 4 Pekalongan, the school integrates Merdeka Curriculum in the classroom, which translates to the “Independent Curriculum.

The Merdeka Curriculum was introduced in 2022 and officially approved as the National Curriculum through the Ministry of Education, Culture, and Research (MoECRT) Regulation No. 12 of 2024. It aims to enhance student competencies and character development across different learning levels aligned with both national and international standards. (Jeong et al., 2024). This curriculum is built on a learner-centered approach, it encourages student’s active participation and self-directed learning.

According to American University (2023), a learner-centered approach empowers students to take responsibility for their learning. Instead of focusing solely on memorization, this approach promotes critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration. The Merdeka Curriculum aligns with these principles by allowing students to explore concepts independently.

During my exchange program at SMP Negeri 4 Pekalongan, I had the opportunity to observe and experience how the Merdeka Curriculum is implemented in the classroom. From the beginning of my journey at SMP Negeri 4 Pekalongan, my cooperating teacher, Mr. Nur Yahya, S. Pd., introduced me to the curriculum and its purpose: to improve students’ competencies.

Through my classroom observations, I observed how my cooperating teacher applied Merdeka Curriculum in his lessons. My cooperating teacher also shared that because students have different learning styles, the curriculum allows him to be more flexible in his teaching. His primary focus was on enhancing students’ English proficiency and reading comprehension, ensuring they improve their language skills beyond theories.
